Track Biography:

The Avondhu foxhounds were formed in 1920, with point-to-point racing being held as part of the Cork Waterford circuit from the late 1930's until the present day. In the late 1950’s the meeting was held at Knockanard, Fermoy and racing was over banks.

In the 1960's the venue changed once again, this time to Lisnagar outside Rathcormac. The fixture remained here for a number of years before moving to Moorpark, located just outside Fermoy, where it stayed until 1994 where it return to the original venue at Knockanard, the current race venue.

Our fixture has attracted some good horses over the years including Keen Leader, For Bill, Missed That and Joacci. Missed That won on his only start between the flags as a five-year-old at Knockanard, he subsequently won the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival.

For Bill was a prolific race mare, clocking up eleven career wins including, two point-to-points, three national hunt flat races (bumpers), three hurdles and three chases, registering back type over hurdles and fences. The presenting mare has breed one runner thus far, Speak Easy, who won his maiden point-to-point at Kilworth in March of 2017 for the Donnnchadh Doyle yard and was subsequently sold to Joseph O'Brien for 220,000 pounds and now runs in the colours of J. P. McManus.

Nestled in the Irish countryside, a day out at Knockanard point-to-point is a perfect family occasion, get up close and personal with the future stars of the Irish National Hunt scene.

It has paid to follow Derek OConnor in this race of late, as he has won the last three renewals courtesy of No Flies On Him, Goraibhmaithagat and Best Trump. All three carried the famous green and gold silks of owner JP McManus, as could be the case with his two entries in the bid for a four-timer, with All Hands On Deck an E80,000 store purchase. Brian Lawless introduced a very impressive winner at Punchestown last week, and the E65,000 Jukebox gelding, Jessbers Jury, could represent his burgeoning stable, whilst Ellen Doyle was another handler to enjoy four-year-old success last week, and King Of Ballysimon is her entry in this.

The Colin Bowe pair of BARBAR ESKO and Dark Til Daylight both boast a similar profile in that they each have three runs under their belts, but both will need to bounce back from non-completions last time. Spartan Brave was not beaten too far at Dromahane last April, and is entitled to step forward with that initial effort under his belt, whilst Mybluesuedeshoes was a E75,000 store purchase and could be better than his Dromahane debut.

Sworn Duty overcame an absence when winning well at Dromahane, Time In A Bottle impressed on stable debut at Tyrella, whilst Shake The Bag is another for the shortlist.

LORD OF KERAK comes into this in the best form, having finished placed in both outings in open company last month. He has unseated his rider in both outings over the banks, including in this race 12 months, so connections will be hoping it is third time lucky in the cross country sphere. Lough Derg Spirit has won over the banks in Lingstown, but has not shown a huge amount since spending over a year on the sidelines, whilst Knockiel Synge, who was sent off as the favourite for this race last year, is a banks specialist who ran respectably behind the Cheltenham Festival contender Chemical Energy at Lingstown last time.

TWOPLUSTWO EQUALS may have reserved all of her best outings over hurdles for Good ground, but she showed that she is just adept on softer underfoot conditions when finishing second at Dromahane in December, and she could gain a deserved success in this. Glenmalure Flyer will also be in receipt of the mares allowance, and she only went down by a neck at Comea last week, with Rongoright missing out by a similarly tight margin in Ballyvodock. The Happy Huntsman is another to consider.

RONGORIGHT only missed out on winning a similar contest at Ballyvodock recently by a head, and he would look to set the standard for this as he seeks to end a run of three consecutive second-placed finishes. I See Fog should be more competitive at this level, having run well in Knockanohill last year before returning to the track, whilst the mare Lucky Balley would hold claims on her Dromahane effort in November.
