Track Biography:

The first Westmeath Foxhounds point-to-point took place in Loughegar in 1875. The Westmeath Foxhounds point to point committee have been holding meetings in Castletown Geoghegan for almost forty years. Prior to that, meetings were held at Mullingar Racecourse at Newbrook and Cullion, now the venue of Mullingar Showgrounds and Mullingar Rugby grounds.

During our Spring fixture we have one of the most prestigious contests run in the point-to-point circuit, the Barbour Cup. It has been the race where many racing stars have returned to point-to-pointing to run in Open Lightweights and have taken part in this historic race.

In addition, many young horses who have won their maiden here, have continued very successful careers on the track. For example previous course winner,  It Takes Time won the Ascot Gold Cup and wasthird in the Stayers Hurdle at the Cheltenham festival aswell as finshing fourth in the English Grand National. Royal Caviar, who won his maiden in 2013, went on to win four times on the track as well as finishing fourth in the 2017 Arkle chase at the Cheltenham festival.

SEA PRINCE was beaten less than two lengths on his debut at Stradbally last May having made a couple of jumping errors on that occasion. That experience should stand to him and he brings the strongest form into this for a stable that has already enjoyed success this term. The obvious danger is Heritier De Sivola who finished third in the Tipperary maiden that produced the last Sundays Monksgrange Music Drive, whilst the Colin Bowe team have started the season particularly strongly and their two newcomers could certainly be of interest.

SWEET AUBORN was sent off as the favourite for her debut at Monksgrange last Sunday before coming down in the final mile. That market confidence could be worth following once again. Having only been denied victory in this race last year by the subsequent hurdle-placed Fire Love, Drumlees Pet returns in a bid to go one place better 12 months on having only run twice in the interim period. She is a danger alongside, Sevenofus who made the frame in two autumn outings before disappointing on her return at Lisronagh in May, and the locally trained Ballingarry runner-up Its the Way To Go.

Northern raider WILLIAM TYNDALE ended last season by putting up three big performances during the month of May culminating in two particularly comprehensive victories at Necarne and Kirkistown. He would be expected to regain the winning thread on his return to complete the hat-trick. Beyond Redemption was in the process of taking a big step forward at Oldcastle last Saturday before a final-fence error denied him what had seemed a sure-fire success. He adds real depth to this as he goes in search of quick compensation alongside recent wide-margin maiden winner Baghdad Central and the interesting stable debutant Bucks Bins who is a 122-rated hurdler.

The Sam Curling yard won a similar race at Monksgrange last Sunday with a recently placed hurdler and WASDALE PARK comes here with a similar profile. The pointing debutant has been placed in three maiden hurdles including a narrow defeat at the hands of the former point winner My Immortal at Kilbeggan in August which leaves him with the standout piece of form entering this. He could be tough to oppose. Jubilee Gold and Bronaghs First look next best of those that have been seen in action between the flags.

Eleven months ago MIGHTY STOWAWAY put up a big display on his seasonal bow, dismissing the capable Rewritetherules by a distance at Tinahely. That was the second year in succession that he had started the new season on a winning note, and now sporting the same colours as former champion pointer Kruzhlinin, he could make it three years in a row. Some Are Lucky is two from three around here and could run in this race for the third year in a row, having been victorious 12 months ago, whilst the regular front-runner Creadan Grae finished last season by winning at Kirkistown.

Preview

SMITHS GIRL only missed out in the dying strides on finishing third over hurdles at Punchestown off a mark of 108 in January when with Shane Crawley. She could make a winning debut between the flags on what is also her first start for Brian Galvin. Rian Thomas is another track recruit that has changed stables and he comes here with three placed efforts under rules to his name, whilst Its the Way To Go, Knockiel Synge, Drumlee Brexit and the long-absent Sum It Up are others that cannot be discounted.
