Track Biography:

East Down Foxhounds Point-to-Point course at Tyrella is situated at the foot of the picturesque Mourne Mountains made famous by the Percy French song.

With the 2018 Spring season, East Down will have been racing at Tyrella for fifty four years. Two meetings are held each Spring, in January and March.

Normally the first meeting of the Spring calendar in the Northern Region, Tyrella is a right handed undulating track where, given it’s close proximity to the sea and sandy soil is well drained and more often than not, produces good going.

How To Get There

By Road

From The South:
Take the M1 North from Dublin. In Newry take the A25 through Rathfriland. In Clough at T junction go right and immediately left to get to Tyrella.

From the West:
Leave the M1 at Lisburn (junction 6). Take the A1 turning off at Hillsborough. Follow the signs to Ballynahinch and then follow the signs for Newcastle. Go through Seaforde village and then Clough. At the end of Clough Main Street turn left, following the sign for Tyrell. The course is on the right after about four miles.

From the North:

Facilities

Access for spectators is directly from the road into the car park which is adjacent to the start/finish straight. Visibility is excellent and the whole course can be seen from everywhere.

This allows racegoers to get up close to the action, often from the comfort of their car, should they wish to bring their own picnic for the family.

We have bookmakers on site and some will also show and take bets on track racing in both Ireland and England.
 

Food

Our outside catering vendor has a variety of catering options from tasty hot lunches to sandwiches and confectionary.

Beverages

Race goers can purchase teas, coffees and soft drinks from our outside catering outlet.

Is there a dress code for point-to-points?

We don?t have a dress code but do recommend suitable clothing.

Yes, no problem at all but they must be kept on a lead at all times.

Yes, we welcome visitors to bring their own picnics or refreshments but why not treat yourself to something from our outside caterers from your race winnings.

At our point-to-point, we are lucky to have wide open spaces for children to play in a safe environment.

No we do not provide an ATM so we recommend that you make a stop in the nearby towns on your way to the races.

A day at Tyrella point-to-point races is the ideal day out for all the family in the heart of the Mourne Country.

One of the real treats of racing at Tyrella, is just how close racegoers can get to the action.

Watch the horses being saddled up by their trainers before making your way to the parade ring where the horses, jockeys and connections gather to discuss their pre-race tactics.

WHERES BUNNY has had the misfortune of parting company with her rider in each of her two outings to date, including most recently when coming down late at Borris House when destined to make the frame in an effort which would leave her as a leading contender for this. Aprils Joy went close on Good ground at Loughanmore in the spring, before failing to make much of an impression under rules during the summer. Having changed stables since her last outing, she is sure to be of interest back between the flags. Of the others, Tango Theatre took a step forward at Borris before Christmas and is progressing.

IL COURRA stayed on strongly when coming from off the pace to finish third at Lingstown on his debut in November and it may not take much further improvement to get his head in front here. The Dara Man would look the big danger as he was something of an eye-catcher on his competitive bow at Kirkistown, whilst Here We Have It was only denied by a head in a four-year-old maiden in Mainstown before Christmas, and will be looking to put right his early exit at Dromahane on his only subsequent start, alongside Ballycrystal runner-up Tommys Oscar.

LIKE A DEMON has struggled to make an impact in the Cross Country and Hunter Chase sphere of late, but he was only narrowly denied on his latest outing in the pointing fields at Dowth Hall back in October and should be at home in this company. This race has attracted a top class entry featuring many of the leading hunter chasers and open performers of late, including last seasons Aintree Foxhunters runner-up Burning Ambition, who will be out to make amends for his mid-race departure at Down Royal over Christmas. The fourth and fifth from that race, Val De Ferbet and Coastal Tiep, are other leading hunter chasers who could clash against the hat-trick seeking Eddies Miracle. He won his second race of the season in a big-field open at Borris House before Christmas, whilst Chosen Dream, who has course winning form from around here in 2014, and track recruit, Tycoon Prince, who was placed in Graded company as recently as last February, are other potential contenders.

MILANFORD could be set for a quick re-appearance as he bumped into an above-average older maiden winner at Ballycrystal last Sunday. He has been knocking on the door for a long time, and it would not be a surprise to see him take this. His former stablemate Duckphil has gone close in each of his three outings since joining a new yard, but he has not run since March, whilst other contenders such as Choctaw Brave and Airdrigh have more recent efforts to their names.
